Southport and Sefton are two of the most attractive parts of the North West both offering broad and contrasting appeal. An area to the north of Liverpool and featuring mile after mile of scenic coast, Southport is a thriving town which built its name as a classic English resort, adjoined to the south with the busier district of Sefton, which is also regarded as a popular area to live and work.
The entire region is serviced by excellent road and rail links and is easily reachable from both the bright lights of Liverpool and Manchester, but far enough away to have its own identity.
Tracks
Currently, GP training comprises of 18 months in primary care and 18 months in hospital posts.
Where possible we like you to experience a 6 month GP post early in your training. This is to help you focus on what you would wish to get out of your hospital attachments.

Allocating Tracks
When you have been successful in your application to come to the Sefton and North Liverpool you will be contacted by Dr Jennifer Topping, the Training Programme Director for that area. Dr Topping will ask you to name your ideal 4 hospital posts to enhance your GP training. You may consider your previous experience when describing this - more weight would be attached to post-foundation experience.
Dr Topping will then try as much as possible, with the hospital posts available to her, to match your request. If there are not enough posts available in a particular speciality then priority will be given to the person with the higher recruitment score. We do our best when matching preferences.
You may be eligible for accreditation of transferable competencies. To qualify, you must be transferring into general practice from one of the RCGP Approved Speciality Training Programmes
If you intend to apply for less than full time training, you would need to apply formally using the HENW website.

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust

01704 547471Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust provides comprehensive healthcare services to 258,000 people across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire. This is an “integrated care organisation” (ICO) delivering care in hospital and the community, employing nearly 3500 staff.
Acute care is provided at Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk and District General Hospital. This includes adults’ and children’s accident and emergency services, intensive care and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Women’s and children’s services, including maternity, are provided at Ormskirk hospital. In addition, the Trust is responsible for many adult community health services, mainly in north Sefton and West Lancashire, which are provided in health centres, clinics and at patients’ homes.
The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport Hospital provides specialist care for spinal patients from across the North West, North Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides sexual health services for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton. The Ormskirk site also hosts the West Lancashire Health Centre which deals with minor injuries, as well as offering drop-in GP services from 8am-8pm seven days a week. Tel 01695 588800.
Aintree Hospital

0151 525 5980The Trust also offers posts at Aintree Hospital. This is a teaching hospital of the University of Liverpool and a tertiary centre providing specialist services to around 1.5m residents in Merseyside, Cheshire, South Lancashire, North Wales and the Isle of Man. Tertiary services include Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Maxillofacial and Liver Surgery, all of which have world-class reputations.
In October 2015, the Trust Board agreed to a merger between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital NHS Trust. This hospital is the headquarters of UNISON Sefton Health Branch. In 2012, the trust established an Electronic Health record system which enabled it to dispense with paper records which had previously occupied 10 miles of shelving! In December 2013 the Trust was named by Dr Foster Intelligence as having higher than expected mortality indicator scores for the period April 2012 to March 2013 in their hospital guide 2013. The Report also indicated that the hospital HSMR mortality indicator was better than expected.
Also, in the 2013 National Apprenticeship Awards, the hospital was named “Large Employer of the Year” out of a list of 100 nominations.
